Questions on a 7041242
« on: April 05, 2025, 04:13:34 AM »
So my uncle just picked up a 1971 Buick Centurion convertible. With a supposed 55k original miles. I did some looking around the forum here, and only found 3 threads on that number and the newest thread being from 2015,  so maybe I can get a little more info today. Info that I have found being, 075" Primary Jets, 45B Secondary Metering Rods, "K" Secondary Hanger and AV Secondary Metering Rods. Now, the hanger is definitely an I hanger. So that has been changed if the K was original. I have not opened it up yet as he just wanted an initial looksee. It starts and runs/drives okay, And he needs to get the exhaust fixed as it was damaged being driven onto the car hauler.
Is there anything with this casting that I should look out for, (other than leaky well plugs of course).
Best current Pic I have as the top has a slight leak and it hasn't stopped raining this week.

Nice carburetor, one of the true 850cfm units produced before 1975.

It may be a Service Replacement carburetor, check the Julian Date.

It would be extremely rare to see the bottom plugs leaking on one of those.  Leaky bottom plugs is pretty much a myth with later production Q-jets.

The leak rate for units made from 1965-68 is right at 100 percent.  In 1969 the factory made the castings thicker in that area and pressed in and swaged over solid aluminum plugs which pretty much stopped that issue.

Even so every Forum you go to, every "guru", resident expert, etc that talks about Q-jets will tell you to smear a ton of JB Weld (Monkey Chit) over bottom plugs that were never leaking in the first place.

In any and all cases test the plugs on every single Q-jet that you work on and address that issue if/when needed.

Anyhow, the 7041242 is a factory "hot rod" and doesn't need much help anyplace.  It does take special parts, which will be included in my rebuild kits for them:
