What would be a good carb for my build?
« on: July 08, 2025, 09:35:17 AM »
I'm building a mildly warmed over Chevy 305 and was wondering what a good carb would be to get for a starting point to get the fuel system dialed in. I'm using a .421/.444 lift cam (204/214 duration @ .50 lift) and flat top pistons to try for a compression ration of around 9.5-1 with 1 5/8" headers and a true dual exhaust. I doubt this engine will ever see much more than 4000 rpm. I have a stock aluminum quadrajet intake and two smog era carbs in my collection (17059226, 17059064) but I don't know if either of them would work for my application, or if I would be better off starting with an earlier non-smog carb and just running the engine without the egr, etc. This car has a 5-speed transmission and the carbs I have are both automatic trans. carbs according to the numbers (they end in even numbers).

Thanks for any help.

Either will be fine properly modified.
Get Cliff´s book and parts and you´ll be good to go.
