Mid Range Stumble
« on: July 14, 2025, 11:11:05 PM »
I've got a 72 suburban with what I believe is the factory carb on it, 7042211. I put some fresh gas in it the other day, started it and it ran ok, idles fine, all was well until I hit the highway and got up to speed when it began surging and struggling, pretty clearly starving for fuel mid-range. Carb is stock, so is the truck except for an hei, it has some miles on it but well maintained, I pulled the carb apart, checked the filter, gave it a visual inspection and a cleanup but everything looked fine. Blasted all the passageways and jets with compressed air, etc. Still has the same mid-range starvation problem. I notice while driving with it surging and struggling, if I hold it WOT it will start to smooth out somewhat as the revs increase but its still running lean. Haven't changed anything with the truck since it ran fine, it just sat for a year or two. But I figured if I had missed some sludge in there it would be the idle side with problems. I changed the fuel pump, same issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks! I havent ordered a rebuild kit yet, figured if theres any specific parts I need I would add them on the same order.

Do you have full power, about 14 volts with engine running, at + on HEI distributor?

Yes voltage is good at the hei. I have a 75 gm van with a quadrajet, so I pulled it and threw it on the suburban and it ran fine. So, must be something in the carb, but I gave it a real thorough inspection, cant see an issue. There must be something blocking a passageway, only thing I can think makes sense. This kind of stuff always make me suspect an ethanol in the fuel or similar type issue- something clogging things up after it sits for a while. I'm going to play with it today, will report back if I make some headway, thanks!

So I pulled it apart again, only thing I could find was the little fuel filter at the fuel inlet was somewhat restrictive. It looked ok color wise, etc. But it has the little ball check-valve inside the filter and when I blew through it was noticeably more restrictive than the standard filter. So I swapped them out and it made some improvement. I'll take it for another drive tmrw and if it runs good I'll call it fixed.

Looks like it was the fuel filter, lesson learned, no more of the filters with the check ball valve.
