Changing the choke pull-off from the rear to the front
« on: November 12, 2025, 11:33:42 AM »
Question, I thought I had read on here somewhere that it's possible to use a front mounted style of choke pull-off on the 80's truck carbs that came with the rear mounted choke pull-off.

Was i dreaming, or is it possible, and if so, how do you make the linkage work?
Because of the design of the air horn on these with the rear pulloffs, the stop tab is not in the correct location if you use an air valve shaft with the slot in it for a front mounted pull-off.  How can you do this? What modifications are necessary?
Thanks in advance for any advice regarding this.

 Rick

PS: im trying a truck carburetor to see if my issues are with my engine or the Cadillac carb, #17057230, that's been giving me a headache for months.
Im gonna try a 17084226 and see what happens. This one is unmolested, and if had it on a 327 and it worked great. But to use it on my Burb I have to remove the rear pull-off.

One of my 17084226s had both a front and a rear choke pulloff.  I'll try to get a photo later if the front one is still attached.

When I tested the release times, though, the front was a lot slower to allow the secondaries to open than the rear one was.

I've got clearance issues, that's why I'm switching it to a front mounted style.
Yes, pictures of the linkage and the bracket on the end of the shaft so I can see what design I need to look for.  Thanks for that, much appreciated.

The 17084226 did NOT use a front choke pull-off from factory.
You´ll need the rear choke pull-off and the link to the airvalve shaft for proper functions.

I didn't think it looked stock (I have a shelf full of that p/n and none of the others had a front pulloff), but it was there when it arrived.  I'll look and see if it's still installed and if so I'll get a photo.

If you just want to test run that carb and don't have room for a rear pull-off
just don't run a rear pull-off...for now. Add a little extra air valve tension and
it will be good enough for what your testing. You will however need a front pull-off
for the choke. Any pull-off from about 76 up will bolt right on and does not matter
how much time delay. If you like the way it runs you can go ahead with the full
front-only conversion.

Yes, I used a later style pull-off and just swapped the shaft for one that used the front pull-off, then made a bracket for an adjustable stop.

You mean like this? I'll have to get more if this isn't what you want.

Nice work!

Thanks, the donor for the aluminum I used was the base plate off of an electric Dual-jet. Why not, right? A hacksaw, a couple of files, and a piece of sandpaper and its done.
My first attempt was too thin and it cracked when I installed the adjustment screw. My mistake was in not threading the hole all the way through.  I tried to leave just a half a thread uncut for resistance so that the screw would hold its position.
This one is threaded all the way and I just used blue Locktite to keep it from moving.

Was just looking through the old threads and found this on the subject. I had to screenshot it, so it's posted below.
