Few concerns/questions before diving into the rebuild
« on: January 17, 2011, 01:03:09 PM »
Howdy,

I'm a new member here from Houston, TX.  I picked up a good core before I even finished your book, Cliff.  It is a godsend to those in the dark about Q-jets as I was (gave away my factory '85 core and bought an Edelbrock carb :-[).  I have a fairly nice 17059213 that I'll be rebuilding sometime in the future.  It looks clean but has been rebuilt before.  0.038" idle tubes and 0.052" channel restrictions all with the factory steel plugs over the idle screws :D.

My major concern at the moment is I have noticed that my airhorn has the common warpage.  I measure it to be about .025" raised in the center.  My plan is to sand it flat using 80 grit sand paper attached to some thick plate glass (I do not have a bench sander).  But I'll need to remove the sec. bleed tubes, sec. discharge tubes, sec. POE tube (the airhorn was kind enough to drop one out for me), and also the front vacuum tube for the choke pull off.  Is there any special method to getting these out without bending/pinching them?  Just local heat and pliers?  That vacuum tube will be the hardest to get out I imagine.  The same question goes for driving them back in.  Also when I drive the bleed, discharge, and POE tubes back in what height should I shoot for?

Thanks in advance.

I pull all of those tubes out with a small pair of wire cutters.  In almost all cases they pull out easily.  Stubborn ones may require a little heat to the casting around them with a propane torch.

Our HP kits come with a .015" thicker gasket to use between the main body and airhorn, in addition to the stock gasket.

You can substitute the thicker gasket in the SR kits for no additional charge......Cliff

Got 'em all out.  Thanks Cliff!

Only the choke pull off vacuum tube required heat.  And it did get a bit roughed up during removal in addition to already being slightly bent.  It's probably reusable, but I wonder how easy it would be to make a replacement for it out of small tube stock from the hobby store?

Steel tubing works best, brass is OK if you can find the right diameter?......Cliff
