Parts for Pontiac fuel line??
« on: March 03, 2011, 08:08:10 PM »
I am putting a 73 firebird back to stock and have a 72 manifold installed, with a 74 I believe quadrajet.  the fuel filter housing from the Holley does not fit the quadrajet.  So I'm assuming I need the fuel line from the pump to the fuel filter housing which is a hard line.  But I'm not seeing any of the rest of what I need online, any idea's on sizes and fitting needed.

Also had questions on the linkage.  I have found a new ball stud online but do I this hooked up right and how would you guys hook up the TV cable.

Lastly what parts and install info are needed to install and electric choke on this setup?

Thanks here is what I have so far!

OK, the fuel line is just a piece of 3/8 (or 5/16 sometimes) with two 45 degree double flare fittings (male threads). scrounge the junkyards or possibly get the fittings from an auto parts store like NAPA. you can fab  your own line with the help of a flaring tool and a small tubing bender. The other option would be to use hose nipple fittings in the pump/filter housings and rubber fuel hose. I would make sure to get the "fuel injection" type of hose as it is more compliant for the "new" fuels these days that contain alchohol. (I believe the fuel injection hose has the "9R" stamped on the hose). It is also less prone to absorb heat.  If you do not have experience using a flaring tool, practice on some scrap tubing first as it takes a few trys to get the hang of it.
Ok, now for the next problem, the carb you have does not look like it has a provision for a kickdown from what I can see. (kinda looks like a manual trans equip. carb) Usually the kickdown cable is positioned towards the inside and down and the accel.cable is up and out (from the center of the carb. (as you can see from the bracket for the cables what the approximate orientation is). when the accel. is pressed, the t.v. cable is pulled forward (as the accel cable goes backwards towards the firewall). You may have to modify the throttle shaft or swap it out for a different one. I believe the lower holes on that shaft/linkage are for a return spring that goes towards the rear and hooks the spring to the cable bracket. (on the manifold)
It will be difficult to change this carb to an electric choke. I think there is a aftermarket
kit somewhere to do this but i do not know for sure where I saw it. As far as using original parts,  It is possible, but the parts are hard to come by. If it were me, I would go without a choke. I've started my Pontiac at 13 degrees F without a choke, jus had to feather the throttle a bit and let her warm up for a minute. Anyway, good luck with the Pontiac!!

Thank you!!!!

I don't mind running the rubber hose but how do I hook it up to the carb?  It needs an adapter right?

Bummer on the carb I was told it was for an auto, is this something that can be changed out to accept the TV cable?  I do have a six speed but I was hoping to just run the auto for the summer and do the six speed swap next winter.  I guess I could just do the manual downshifts...

well first you need to get that fuel inlet filtr housing ( I do not see it in the photos, it threads into the front snout and was factory installed) available from several places, new or used. Cliff could get you one I guess. Or, snatch one from the salvage, this has the threaded, inverted flare recess already machined onto the end of it, ready for the line or ""barbed adapter"" (from napa or elsewhere)/ Then all you need is the barbed adapter for the fuel pump. Its possible that you may need some other adapters to make it work for your pump depending what thread size etc. measure and tell them what size line you want (3/8 if possible). then get an appropriate length of "fuel injection" style of hose. sometime the idiots at the parts store will scratch their heads and say "huh??" Insist that fuel injection hose does indeed exsist and make tham go to the back and actually "look at the hose rack" look for the 9R stamped on the hose itself and the words "fuel injection" right in it. also, tell them to give you 2 of the appropriate "fuel injection" hose clamps. by the way, some of the fuel pumps already have a hose barb installed but not all.
As far as the T.V. cable is concerened, yes it is very possible and really not that hard to swap out the throttle shaft to one that would be T.V. cable compatible. All you need is a donor throttle shaft that will work. Tools for the job include a dremel with a small cut-off, a small punch and hammer and a few screwdrivers and some new screws fpr the throttle plates (optional really if you want to try reusing your old screws by lock-tightening them in). You may also need a gasket if you remove the basplate to do the job (easier that way). You also have to know how it comes apart so Cliff's book I consider as a valuable tool. I would definitley run the TV cable if at all possible with that trans.( I am assuming it is a turbo 350)

We have EVERYTHING required to set that carb up for an electric choke, TV cable, fuel filter housing, etc.

Call the shop when you get time, and we'll get what you need headed your way.  I'd replace the choke pull-off at the same time.....thanks....Cliff

Thanks for the help Omaha!  Makes sense!

Cliff I called and left a message today.  Look forward to touching base and getting setup.  I was under the impression that I was going to have to run an electric choke with this carb on the 72 intake?  If not then I would need the parts for that as well, although at this point I might just plug it.  Not like its going to be driven in cold weather.

Cliff I've tried to call and get the message machine.  Plus I've been crazy busy at work.  Could you email the total and maybe a paypal request?  bobmo123@msn.com?

I also need a return spring for this setup and the rear vacumn housing for the power brakes.  Looking forward to getting this thing running again so I can finish the suspension and brakes!!
