charcoal canister??
« on: May 30, 2011, 10:27:02 AM »
The charcoal canister on the old Dodge is not in good shape. It make noise when you shake it kind of like a cofee can full of sand/rocks. of course the rubber lines are pretty "toasty". Not wanting to be totally biased against "enviromental" issues, I was wondering what would be a good alternative. Im sure someone probly has the  original unit but at a high $$$. Do the canisters really do that much? Shoud I plug the original vent coming out of the front of the carb. (1984 Qjet) Would this effect anything. the gas tank is also vented to this. Now that im thinking about it, if the canister was clogged and you had a nonvented gas cap, could this interfere with fuel flow?

The Charcoal caninster certainly isn't going to cost any power or performance.  It's used to vent fumes from the carb.

Not sure if it's a vent for the tank or not?

The only problem that can occur with them, is leaking tiny peices back into the carb thru the hose to the vent.

This seldom happens with Q-jets, as they are usually on V-8 engines and the canister is a long distance, and lower than the carb.

Chrysler made some front wheel drive cars back in the mid-1980's that had MAJOR issues with the charcoal canisters putting material in the the carburetors, as the canister was mounted close to, and on the same plane as the carburetor.....Cliff
