The Right Carb?

Hi guys.

I bought a POS 10/71 72 Chevy C20, 350 4b 4 speed truck. Intended as a farm truck and trailer puller.
It was cheap and a strong rebuilt motor v1012trh, 71/72 depending on what list you look at?

It has a cracked EGR manifold w no choke, that's getting replaced with a edelbrock 2101 that looks new for 80.00 and heading for a new divorced choke, even though this has headers. It is Mississippi so no real winter most of the time..

I found a massive vacuum leak under the Cadillac ? carb, haven't found numbers but i didn't look when i had it off.  Choke problems and 8 mpg keeping my foot out of it,  but tremendous performance.

My neighbor advocates Edelbrock.  I have read several articles on how to make a holley 8679 as good as a Qjet.

The junk yards ant what they used to be and folk don't keep junker like they used to either.
Picking up a "rebuilt" carb is my best option. The parts houses are rather high. Nationalcarburetors
Talks a great talk on the website, price too.

I need reliability with a side of millage, at a reasonable price.

Someone steer me in the right direction.

I was looking at the number list at digitalcorvettes. There is No 72 chevy c20 350 listed. 4 or 5 402's in a row though.

7041208  is a 71 is there really that much difference? I found one on ebay.
Yet with the crush ability its still a gamble.

So help a poor boy out

Well earlier today i found someone showing numbers and saying if it has a/c it has to end in a 3

I just found a discussion  #6  68 50th shows the page   http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=322351

72 350 c20-30  has carb number 7042208 both auto and manual  trans, 49 states and cal.

Now i know what to look for.

digitalcorvettes says its a c10 a/t

So is there any indication for a/c? I know there is a kick up sol needed.

The original engine would not have had an EGR intake, but it would have been divorced choke, at least from what I remember about truck engines from that period.  The EGR and CAT didn't show up on trucks till around 1977-1978, depending on GVW.

I would NOT buy a commercially "remanufactured" carburetor, they are complete pieces of junk, we don't even want any sent here to rebuild/recalibrate.

Any divorced choke Chevy carburetor from 1972-1977 will make a suitable replacement for the orginal if you can't find one. 

I'm sure we have several 7022208's in the core pile in the shop, very little call for that part number.....Cliff

Yea I don't know who or why the EGR , the truck came with a 4B.

72-77 does open the field up a bit. I don't like electric chokes they only work on the time with power, but they are easy.

Send me a email and let me know some numbers.

I have seen your kits, and the 3 different pumps?

And just saw a 9-10 month waiting list. I have worked on a few but not the kind of rebuilding you do.

Just went through hell with a holley, a day of soaking and hour getting the accelerator pump out of the metering plate, 4 more days soaking and blowing out, then boiling and blowing, after about a hour, I started polish the accelerator pump chamber, Then i could see the little flat spot.  The i could see the little flat spot on the outside.

PO smacked it with a hammer. 500.00 for a 1 barrel and the 3000 Ford tractor runs great.

Well no one got back to me and i filled out a inquire form too.

So i scrounged up a couple carbs and got the parts from a very helpful guy, who i won't mention here.

First try it sprayed gas like a lawn sprinkler. Took it back apart and didn't find anything but did spread the float pivot clip to put more pressure on it.  Working good, better vac, 650 idle, cranks with just the key though you do have to play with the throttle when cold for a min.

Still have to get the choke on it.

Got the vac secondary working ok but not quite right.  the secondary cam is bigger, the 2 old ones are almost Exactly the same. I may have to play with the secondary rods/hanger.

But Strong to 5000.

Not the road test for mileage.

Oh and no one wants to talk about economizing a quadrajet.

ds. i tune for mileage with a vacumn guage . i buy 6 ft of hose and run it in the cab.every vehicle is diff. my 72 ford ltd 429 with 9.7 comp. iske 262 mega cam.and a 1979 800 quad i lean it out until it hesitates up a small incline . then i increase 1 jet size the car weighs 4600 lbs has 2.75 gear ratio.at cruising speed 80 mph ya i live in big wonderful wyoming.not to many people on the highway and its far betweeen towns it pulls a steady 15 to 16 inches and gets 15 to 16 mpg.the carb has an APT that i adjust for fine tuning.at $3.78 for premium you got to make every gallon count. hope this helps. dean
