17057553 for my Cutlass 455
« on: May 11, 2012, 06:06:51 AM »
Hi Guys!  First post.  My Cutlass project 455 replacement has been going on for years.  I bought the kit from Cliff in 2007, I think.  Finally rebuilding the core I obtained.  455 has aluminum heads, XE274 cam (230/236, 520/523), Performer intake, but using 71 442 exhaust manifolds and no headers.  Followed #3 recipe but question primary rod and jet combination.  Original rod was a 49 and jet a 74.  I was going to put in 77 jets to maintain as closely as possible the recommended size spread between the rod size and jet, but started thinking I was doing this backwards and 77's are just too big.  I went ahead and ordered the 44 rods in the parts section which came up as a 43 rod when added to cart for my carb #.  What combination of sizes should I be shooting for?  455 is not installed at this time. I also have a 2004R tranny I plan to swap in which I don't have linkage for, and Haven't picked a rear end ratio yet.  No strip use for this vert.  Any ideas?  Thank you!

The metering rods we supply for the later carburetors are .044" at the widest point, then taper to .026" tips.  They will work fine for what you are doing....Cliff

thanks!  I received the rods from you in the mail yesterday!  I have a selection of main jets from my kit from 73-77.  If I followed the recipe I would use the 73's.  That seems counter intuitive since 74's were in there from an anemic smog motor, but with the smaller rod tip and all the other mods done to increase fuel flow in the idle system, from the accelerator pump, and secondarys, is this still where I should start?

73's will be fine if you have increased fuel delivery to the idle system.  Better to start out a tad lean than rich.  If you find the 73's lack some power at heavy throttle then go up to the 74's and see if things improve?....Cliff

It's all together!  All that is left is the electric choke conversion.  Thanks for all the help Cliff!!!
