very stinky ruff idle! need help!
« on: November 04, 2012, 10:08:05 PM »
I just bought this carb off a buddy, he bought it new a few months ago from summit racing and didn't like it said it was too rich for his tired 305.  So i gave him 50 for it and figured it would work good on my 350.  The number is 17059504 and it runs pretty rough at idle and stinks bad and burns your eyes.  Its on a 350 with rv cam that goes down the road pretty good with just a little secondary bog haven't tried tightening tension on flaps yet they seem very loose.  Back to the idle, it runs best with mixture screws way out 8 turns or so.  If i close choke 3/4 way it smooths out a little.  It has no nozzle drip and i'm getting a 15 to 16 inch pounds on the vacumm guage.  If i unhook accel pump it doesn't stumble, doesn't stumble with accel pump hooked up either but does make a small black puff of smoke when you blip the throttle.  I'm gonna buy the book and a carb rebuild kit off this sight. just don't know where to start on fixing idle problem.  Oh, also it seems the air horn gasket is wet with fuel its not leaking or dripping.  Last question the the book cover off road mods to these q-jets?

thanks,
Darin

The problem is being a commercially "remanufactured" carburetor.  Hard to tell what you will find.

Should be able to install some good parts and correct any problems with it during the rebuild.  They use "generic" calibrations, so know the jet, metering rod, and airbleed sizes when you order parts so we can help out.....Cliff

thanks for the fast reply. i'll take the carb apart in the next few days and then give you guys a call for the book, rebuilt kit, and parts i may need. i got it running decent now with mixture screw way out, but she's still pretty stinky. never realized these commercially built carbs were that bad untill i did a little research after i bought it. looks really clean and has no shaft play so it should be a good one to fix up. does your book cover the offroad mods? this carb is on my 68 commando wheeler i'm building.

thanks
Darin

as a fellow 4wheeler the book don't have much on offroad mods but the q-jet truly shines there anyways. only things you got to do is plug vents you don't need maybe extend the big main one and just don't set the float to high. i have a BBC 468 in a 84 k20 with a q-jet cliff helped me build and i can climb straight up and down with no loading up at all, side hills don't affect it eather. best carb I've ever used offroad.
