Timing set

Cliff or anyone,

What is you're brand of choice for a timing set? I replaced mine a year ago with a high end Cloyes. Nice & tight going together, 1/2 degree of chain slop after 6 months of use >:(. Summit replaced it & the new set has slack. It will most likely have a degree or two of slop after a few months of use too. Was told Cloyes ain't what it used to be. Butler & a few others use Rollmaster? Hard to find a Rollmaster for a chevy in the States. I need the .005 short set. Summit carries Cloyes & Howards in the short sets. Anyone have any expereince with Howards?

My first choice are the wide link plate sets from Melling.  They are also marketed by several other manufacturer's, Dyna Gear, Speed Pro, etc.

I tried the Rollmaster deal once, and it did well for a couple of years, then stretched out so far it required replacement.

I like the strength and constant tooth contact design of the factory type link plate timing sets.  One disadvantage is that they don't come with 9 keyways for easy cam degreeing......Cliff

Thanks for the reply Cliff. I can't find an link type set avail in an undersize. I tried a link type stock replacement and it was just too loose. It seems the undersize sets are only avail in the double row design.
I called Cloyes about the slop and was told it is normal due to dry starts, modifed galley plugs, chain mating with the gear, etc. Sounds to me like any excuse will work.

Matt

Yep, the Rollmaster is available in undersize, up to .006".

I'd run a loose link plate set before a roller, after my experience here.  The rollers loosen up quite a bit, and continue to loosen up.

The link plate sets loosen a bit, then "set" and last a long time.....Cliff
