Fuel Filter Length Issue
« on: September 04, 2024, 02:58:37 PM »
Just joined and first posting so please excuse me if posting in wrong forum. I just purchased two kits from CHP for my "70 and '78 TAs. I broke down the 7042274 Q- jet off my 70 (not original) and found the fuel filter crushed about 3/16" and twisted. Took some measurements and found the housing that threads into the carb is ½” deep to top of thread. The carb where the filter lives is just under ½” deep, not including spring pocket, to the bottom of the threads. Spring crushes down to 3/16” but believe the spring pocket will except that. New filter is 1” long and without the spring installed, presents resistance for the last 3-4 turns seating the front filter housing home on the carb. Any thoughts as to what piece(s) is incorrect or what was done wrong during previous assembly. With the filter crushed and twisted I believe this is slowing fuel flow and presenting running issues at WOT. Are there different length filter housings? I thought there was just long and short filters? Thanks

I just ordered a new "short" fuel inlet nut from CHP. We'll see what that looks like. I can only assume the one I have is a marine application since the sintered bronze filters are .75".

Check the diameter in bottom of the fitting and compare to filter end.

I guess you have a Cadillac fuel fitting that uses a screen instead of a paper filter.
If it is one of those Cadillac fittings the paper filter will not reach bottom of the fitting and gets crushed.
If you can´t find a screen you may use the brass filter with a gasket OR another fitting for the paper filter.

I received the correct fuel inlet nut today from CHP and find it is .25" longer than my original. This now gives me the room needed for a 1" filter. I now know there is more than just a long and short fuel inlet nut for the Q-jet carbs. Thanks
