Holley rebuilt quadrajet.. "sigh" yes... I said it.
« on: January 05, 2013, 10:29:00 PM »
Hi there, first post, thanks in advance.
The story so far....
I have a quadrajet that was given to me from a friend.  ""supposedly"" it was spec'ed for his 69 396 pick up.  He said it ran fine for awhile, then it started giving him problems.  I asked a few questions and found out he had the intake with the holes under the carb base.  Basically heated the carb and when it started leaking, he changed the carb for another one.  I asked him to just change out the intake and carb, which he did.  Now it runs like a scalded cat.

Now here is where my problems begin... He gave me the holley rebuilt quad, i then bought a walker kit for it, installed it on my 454.   It idles... Badly.   Adjustment screws F/A, no change..
Because after reading all the posts here about reman carbs, is it worth it to do a more intense rebuild jets and all?
I will get the numbers ( like if it has a rebuild SN on it, its worthless) and post tomorrow.
Any direction short of using it as an anchor, greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, checked out the carb an model designation is a 0704230.
it was reman from holley.
Idle= far from ideal.

I will need a  really good kit, what is available from Cliff's and how extensive can it be?
I know the carb isnt from the best years, but it is what i have.

Cliffs book is in the mail from amazon, so ive got time and some reading to do.

Thanks for any responses.

I think that a full investigation is necessary. You never know what will be wrong with a reman carb even if it is from holley. An early carb is fine as long as your setup for the engine is not too crazy. (cam etc) yes, wait for Cliff's book to come in the mail. It really clears up all the mysteries of the Q jet. Cliff has everything you could want as far as kits go but I think teardown of the carb would be the first thing to do. That way you can see if all the parts even match.(at least) (baseplate-maincasting-topcasting). This will give you an idea of what is going on before any parts are ordered.
.......Good luck!!........

Thanks Omaha.
And thanks Cliff.
I got the book (+1) and talked with Cliff about alternative types of carbs.
His preference is to get another carb, one with adjustablility and an electric choke for driveability.
I went so far as looking thru junkyards, and combing Craigslist.  I even called Cliff to ask him questions about this or that type of carb.. I even had my hands on one, when he steered me away from that one...so , i kept looking...

Nada.   I might as well be digging for hens teeth.

Now don't get me wrong, they are out there and You just have to keep digging.   They were either divorced choke or the electronic type and most of them were in bad shape..   I didnt find any of the type i (Cliffs preference) wanted.

I finally found one and it has the electric choke on it.  The number on the carb is 17058212 supposedly off a 454 truck, again with the electric choke. I hadnt called Cliff yet to verify as this being the best one, but i was running out of options.

I can see that i need to Call up for a new kit and possibly idle screws.

The book Is helpfull as it has plenty of pics ( and i dont need my colors!) and information that i need.
So now we see how deep the rabbit hole goes...
Thanks again.
