California standard or Federal standard?

Hi, what is the difference between a California Standard Quadrajet and a Federal Standard Quadrajet? Under the  Carburetor Designation/Identification on your site, 1976-1982,  if the sixth digit of the casting number sequence is a 1 or 2, than that is a Federal application, or if a California application the sixth digit would be a 4 or 5, is that correct? Different calibrations, typically leaner in CA.

If you're building a full custom carb (air bleeds, jets) it doesn't really matter.

What part of CA? I'm in the south Bay Area (northern CA).

Early CA emission carburetors may use a "3" instead of a "2" for the third number.  For example, 1967 Pontiac 48 State would be 7027262, CA 7037262.

Later 1705XXXX carburetors typically used a "5" instead of a "2" for the 6th digit.  For example 17057264 48 State, 17057564 for CA.

If you see a "4" for the 6th number, most were service replacement, 17054910 for example, would be Service Replacment for a Pontiac Super Duty application with auto trans......Cliff

Cliff, forgot to mention that I have  1984 Chevy truck. The casting number would be something in the range of 17084500 -17084529, would that be correct, where the sixth digit over "5", denotes a California application? Thanks

5 indicates CA emissions, most of the CA truck in and after 1981 were computer controlled from what I've seen....Cliff
