A very dub question.  Do we insert the plug by itself or does it require some tape or some sort of sealing goo ?

 Nope, no tape or sealant needed. ;)

ethan just want to add a few things. if the housing has small hairline cracks from being over tightened( which i have seen a lot of )remember the pipe plug is tapered . the harder you crank it in the more it expands the housing. i like to use loctite instant gasket. just a small amount on a few threads. it screws in easy and seals good. also easy to remove next time. hope this helps.

 I wouldn't use anything, but that's just me.
