ARGHH!!!!
« on: February 28, 2016, 12:03:02 PM »
Replaced old QJ with refurbished one, everything hooked up fine. Vacuum hoses all good, linkages all clean not sticking. Throttle screw and high idle screw backed right off. Choke plate stays wide open and rpm's won't drop below 2000. ARGHHH!!!

 Welcome to CHP!

Hate to say it, but that is what you get when you buy a refurbished or remanufactured unit, sadly. :( Best to buy one of the virgin late '70s Qjets, which are plentiful.

I agree with Ethan...If you are somewhat inexperienced with Q-jets and have the time, get Cliff's book, study it, and find a late 70's Q-jet to build.  Cliff's kits are high quality with parts to withstand today's fuels. The reman units are usually a Frankenstein mix of parts with inferior rebuild pieces. A visit with Cliff's shop will get you headed in the right direction with the correct parts for your application!  Welcome to the forum! 8)

Thanks guys! No I know my way around these crazy things - rebuilt my last one. Car sat for a year and ran like crap, didn't really want to go through the hassle of another rebuild. Ordered one from Jet Performance MISTAKE!! First they send me the wrong model, then they try and blame Amazon, whatever I can deal with it - bottom line wrong throttle body gasket and both throttle plates were warped.

At least 1/3rd of what we do these days is going thru carburetors that were just purchased elsewhere.  Sad to say that we find dozens of problems with them, even ones from some of the "big" shops that are supposed to specialize in them.

By far and above the very worse are bought over the counter at an auto parts store, but most of the others aren't too far behind them.......Cliff
