help id this carb please!
« on: April 07, 2016, 08:40:28 AM »
I am trying to help a gentleman in my state, he has what he believes to be a correct carb, but the numbering is much different than I am used to, and it looks (slightly) externally different than the OEM carb for his car.

He has a 1978 Trans Am, this carb is a 17058394.
the numeric date code is 2374 - which could indicate the 237th day of 1984.

I have seen the odd pre-smog service replacement carb that had a weird number, and am wondering if this is one of those units.
I did a couple google searches, and one of them came up with an an eBay listing showing this as being for a late 1970's Trans Am - but since it's was an eBay listing, I am hesitant to believe the seller without confirmation.

Thanks in advance for chiming in!

The listing would be correct. 1977-1978 Pontiac Models 350cid/400cid Non-California A/T, at least according to my manual. Also, as per the date code, it seems it may be a Service Replacement for that specific carb number. ;)

Ok, so then if I'm understanding you, it is a service replacement for all 1977 Pontiac 350 & 400, as well as 1978 Pontiac 400 applications with an automatic transmission.

For 1977 the numbers this replaces would be:
17057262 (350)
17057266 (W72/th350?)
17057274 (L78/th350?)

For 1978 the numbers this replaces would be:
17058266 (W72/th350?)
17058276 (L78/th350?)
17058278 (L78/th350?)

I didn't realize that GM ever made generic replacement carbs like that.

Thanks!

I believe that would be correct. Cliff would be best to answer, but I believe so.

Service Replacement carburetors were just that, sold to replace certain part numbers and may cover a broad range of applications......Cliff
